Intensive Care Unit Errors

Patients in the intensive care unit are more susceptible to medical errors than patients in other units in the hospital due to the complexity of their condition and need for multiple medications and interventions.

Errors in the ICU that lead to malpractice claims include:

  • Failure to administer the right drug to the right patient in the right dosage and frequency

  • Failure to identify and respond to adverse events associated with medications given

  • Failure to appropriately monitor and manage electrolyte levels

  • Failure to prevent blood clots

  • Failure to identify and treat deep vein thrombosis

  • Failure to prevent pressure sores

  • Failure of nursing staff to notify physician of deterioration in vital signs or mental status of patient
